RESUMO
O uso de novos testes genéticos,
como o diagnóstico genético pré-implantação
(DGPI), para a selecção de sexo,
levanta problemas éticos que devem ser
abordados e discutidos pela sociedade
na qual eles se tornam disponíveis. Embora
estes testes não levantem problemas
quando são realizados por razões
médicas, o seu uso por razões “sociais”
levanta questões, nomeadamente de benefi
cência ou justiça social. As escolhas
actuais, feitas pela sociedade vigente,
deverão ser tomadas após apreciação
criteriosa das implicações que elas
poderão vir a ter nas gerações futuras
sem, no entanto, prejudicar o avanço
técnico-científi co e os benefícios dele
decorrentes. ABSTRACT
The use of new genetic tests such
as preimplantation genetic diagnosis
(PGD) for sex selection raises ethical
problems that need to be addressed
and discussed by the society in which
they become available. Although these
tests do not raise any problems when
they are indicated for medical reasons,
questions such as benefi cence or social
justice are ethically relevant when they
are demanded for “social” reasons. The
current choices that are made by the
present society should be based on attentive
appreciation of the implications
that they may have in future generations
without compromising the scientifi c and
technological advances and the consequent
benefits.
